One of the most common things as an insurance agent that I hear after writing someone a policy and placing them with a new company is: "Wow! That was easy! I wish I did that a while ago!"
I think the reason why this is the response, more often than not is- people have this misconceived notion that it requires so much effort. They think they are locked in to a contract with their company sometimes. They think "Oh no. What if I switch companies and I do not like them?" (As if the company the person left would not be happy to take the client back.) They think it will take more than 5-10 minutes of their time to provide basic information that is very accessible. "I got into an accident years ago and my company paid my claim, so I know they take care of me in the event something were to happen and I do not know if this new company will!" "I have been with _____ for a long time and they have always treated me good!"
Okay. First thing that people need to know: In today's day and age, 99 percent of the companies make sure to mirror each other in regards to claims processes, methods of pay, and any other thing they can. There is so much competition, they can not afford to have the basics less than average. In addition, I appreciate loyalty to a company. However, if they have been so good to you, why are these your coverage limits and why are you probably paying 1000 dollars more a year on your policy than you should be? My point is- you can almost come up with any reason not to switch.
A friend of ours, said: "Insurance is just a piece of paper until you need it." This is so true.
Insurance agents see so many situations where people's lives are literally turned upside down because they did not have the proper coverage. They did not want to give an agent 10 minutes of their time to see if they were under-insured or if they were paying too much money for their policy and could save literally thousands of dollars. These same people will go and pay 5 dollars for a cup of coffee everyday but will not pay 50 cents a day for an Umbrella Policy! Unfortunately, a lot of their agents will not even discuss what an umbrella policy is! It is our job as Agents to make sure our clients are informed.
Guys- I took a liking to insurance because I honestly felt like I was helping people. I honestly felt that I was selling them a product that they needed. Please, for your family and yourself, make sure you have the proper coverages. I do not care if you talk to your agent to make sure or the agent down the street. Just take the time to do it. I would be more than happy to speak with you and go over your policy together as well! Just say: "Hey, Eric! Can you look at my policy for me?" I'll say no problem! I would love to.
